Noctua NH-D14 - Review

We learned about Noctua and the quality of its products through tests on the thermal paste NT-H1 and Fans NF-P14 and NF-S12B , three great products, three staff's choice, no other manufacturer has managed to make the center with all its product. Will he do the same with the heatsink NH-D14? The premises are all there, from a bundle already partly rewarded precisely in other reviews.

The box measures 20 × 23.5 × 21 cm and weighs 2.3 Kg. The design is clean, reminiscent of the NF-P14: white box with technical drawings and inserts with the above features and specifications:

When we open the box are inside two boxes. The first, smaller, containing the accessories:
- AMD in September
- Intel in September
- Adapters Ultra-Low-Noise
- 4 pieces of silicone
- NT-H1 thermal paste
- 4 screws
- The logo Noctua metal to be applied on the chassis
- A screwdriver (!)
- Double-user installation (AMD and Intel) in English

Open the second box ... we have another box! :)
Also open the latter, we are finally in front of the sink with its two fans. Fans including the weight is less than 1.3 kg, for the measures we refer to the specifications above, it is difficult to take them exactly in this case. In the bottom of the pack there is another little box empty. Presumably its function is to cushion the blows during transport.
The design is aggressive, with heatpipes that end as they were the bosses, the jagged edges of the blades and form that makes it look like the walls of a fortress ... ok, we play too many RPGs!
Despite the heat sink is composed of 2 blocks, not light, is very solid, as the blades are a bit 'thicker than usual and do not bend thanks to a structure designed down to the smallest details. The lamellae are simply not supported by embedded heatpipes attached inside but hold each other by a chain system that each blade fixed to the lower / higher than 6 points, also the joints are welded. When installing large heatsinks can happen several blades to bend during the "fight" for the installation, in this case is impossible!
To ensure freedom from vibration, Noctua has proved his talent by putting bars on the sides of the silicone heat sink, between the fan and blades. This helps to set the fan as well as to dampen the vibrations smaller.
Inverting the heatsink we notice the 6 heatpipes which terminate on the basis composed of 3 blocks, two to enclose the heatpipes and the last, glossy and smooth, which will be in contact with the CPU. Based naturally find it's attachments to the socket, well designed and very solid, solid as the brackets are also bundled.
The assembly, if not the first time I assembled a large heat sink, it is very easy with the supplied screwdriver. If you are not so practical, you'll want to remove the motherboard to prevent damage to the ram in the "struggle". Because the heat sink, when mounted in the "standard" sconfinerà on the ram.
From the point of view of space, there is no problem, since the two towers are asymmetric, ie one is slightly higher than the other, which allows precisely to avoid any risk.
In addition, both because of the height (understood as the space between the base and first slat) of the towers that the possibility of accommodating the outdoor fan otherwise, NH-D14 is compatible with almost all of the chassis mid and full tower in circulation.
Performance. With those two fans supplied, any sink would enjoy top performance, but Noctua has not wanted to rest on the sun fans and created a sink that does not merely act as a crutch, but it serves the best heat dissipation: what is of CPU time and what is nearby. As yet there is a heatsink on the market able to reach the performance of the NH-D14. We have not tested with extreme overclocking, but also those who have gone further ( Breaking the 5GHz barrier with Noctua's NH-D14 ) will not be disappointed!
The noise is another important factor and in this case - as we expected - Noctua did not disappoint our expectations by offering bundled two fans at the top of the range and quiet.
The cost of the Noctua NH-D14 does not differ much from other high-end products, 70/75 €, but in this case, and only then, we find a bundle that alone is worth about 50 €!
I must say, with NH-D14, Noctua overwhelmingly winning first place in the market for air coolers and does so without neglecting details, trying to satisfy the consumer from all points of view: attractive design, great bundle, excellent materials, low noise and high performance. The owl Austrian strikes again!
